Burgundy
Burgundy prides itself for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and is surely right to do so. The prestigious appellations of the Côtes d’Or – Nuits St George, Gevrey Chambertin and Puligny Montrachet, to name a few, are home to some of the world’s most sought-after wines and the blueprint for quality for wine makers across the world. Stretching from Chablis in the north, through Cote Chalonnaise, to Maconnais in the south, there are many lesser known and great value wines to be found such as St Veran and Maranges. In the far south the Beaujolais region with famous villages of Fleurie and Moulin a Vent predominantly make fruit-driven lighter reds and unoaked whites. The Gamay grape is king of the reds here alongside whites Chardonnay and Aligote. While there is a strong négociant system in place, Burgundy has a multitude of small, sometimes exquisite Domaines, and knowing who is who is crucial. Read more…
