After a career as a wine exporter, Miguel Merino realised his dream of creating his own winery in 1990. In a restored farmhouse in Briones, he built a small winery and barrel-ageing cellar. Miguel sources grapes from small winemakers who own some of the best plots in the heart of Rioja Alta. He focuses on traditional Rioja varieties, Tempranillo and Mazuelo. Miguel’s approach has been to find precious small, old vineyard plots which no one else wanted to work. Designed to be tilled by horse and producing intense fruits, the wines typify the new focus on terroir in the region (most large Bodegas purchase fruit from across Rioja). Passionate, charismatic and a treasure trove of knowledge of Rioja, Miguel is a frequent visitor to our tastings in London. He now owns and runs one of the smallest, youngest and most prestigious wineries in Rioja – rated by Tim Atkin MW as one of the regions’ ‘second growths’. Only around forty thousand bottles are made each year.
