England’s stature in the wine world has grown significantly in recent years. Considerable investment, warmer summers and better winemaking techniques have helped the industry gather pace and England is increasingly being recognised as a premium wine producing region. Most production is of white wines with the Bacchus and Ortega grape varieties making some of the best examples. The reds on a more moderate scale are having some successes too; yet it is English sparkling wines which are the most successful. Made with the same grape varieties used in Champagne and benefitting from a similar chalky soil, the best UK sparklers can rival, or even beat, Champagne for both quality and style. Read more…
