Affordable ‘Super Tuscans’
Tuscany may be home of Sangiovese, but so called ‘Super Tuscans’ do not follow the traditions of the region. In the 70’s, following the example of Sassicaia, a few innovative and quality minded producers began making wines that would become the opposite of Chianti, which started to disappoint customers at the time.
Unlike traditional Tuscan wines, the newly born ‘Super Tuscans’ are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based. Originally these were IGT’s since the grapes used were not permitted under the DOC rules, but the high quality wines produced were so successful they have now achieved the DOC status in the coastal districts of Bolgheri. Super Tuscans have also accomplish international recognition and some producers prefer to keep their wines under the IGT status in order to have complete freedom. Due to this success prices for ‘Super Tuscans’ can get really high, especially in the case of famous Sassicaia and Ornellaia, but their respective little brothers Le Difese and Le Volte offer excellent value for money.
