Château Mouton Rothschild was founded by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, who wanted to serve his own wine to his guest. When he purchased the estate, previously known as Château Brane-Mouton, the quality of the wine produced a decade before fell, which cost Mouton Rothschild to be classified as a first growth in 1855. This was restored in 1973 under Baron Phillipe de Rothschild. The grand vin has the particularity to have its label designed every year by a different artist. Since 1945 some of the most famous artist including Miró, Picasso, and even Prince Charles, have created them. View our selection.
Out of the 90 hectares of vines, 83 are planted with 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with an average of 44 years old vine. 7 hectares are also planted with 53% Sauvigon Blanc, 35% Semillon and 11% Sauvignon Gris. The red wines are usually aged in new oak for 20 months.
Château Mouton Rothschild (grand vin), Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild (second vin) and Aile d’Argent (white wine).
