Château Coutet is the oldest, largest and one of the leading Barsac estates famous for its elegance and balanced sweetness. Barsac is a commune that lies within Sauternes and producers are permitted to use either name to market their wine. In general Barsac is distinguished from Sauternes in being drier with a lighter body. The name “Coutet,” derived from the Gascon’s word for knife, signify the fresh, lively and crisp palate that is the estate’s signature style. In 1787, former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, then ambassador to France, celebrated the wine as the best Sauternes from Barsac. Today the estate is managed by the Baly family in collaboration with the Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. company, the vineyard’s exclusive distributor. View our selection.
They produce four wines; Château Coutet (Grand Vin), La Chartreuse de Coutet (2nd wine), Cuvée Madame de Château Coutet (only up to 1,200 bottles produced) and a dry white wine named ‘Opalie de Château Coutet‘.
