Product description
Finca Azaya is crafted from 100% Tempranillo (Clone Valduero) grown on vines over 20 years old with a yield of just 3,000 kg/ha. The vineyard reflects the unique terroir, with native yeasts. Hand-harvested, the grapes undergo fermentation for 9 days at controlled temperatures of 23º–28ºC, followed by a 10-day maceration. Aged for 14 months in oak barrels of two origins, and an additional 12 months in the bottle. Expressive wine with intense aromas of ripe blackberries, plum, and subtle spices with hints of vanilla and toasted oak. Full-bodied and well-structured, with velvety tannins. A long, refined finish with a touch of cocoa.
This wine from Old Castille took our judges off the beaten Tempranillo path, but everyone loved its alluring liveliness, its grace, its shapeliness and its charm. It's dark black in colour with ripe berry scents backed by bay-leaf and oak-copse complexities. The palate is mouth-filling yet softly textured, with more red berry fruits in a settled and balanced style. A mist of fine tannins adds textural interest, but it's the intrinsic quality of the fruit itself which its creators have wisely decided to put centre stage. This is a hugely amenable red capable of partnering a wide range of dishes with panache. Drink 2019-2025
