Once part of Château Grand-Poujeaux, Château Chasse Spleen was born in 1863 and is a leading estate in Moulis en Medoc. Its name has a poetic origin and is probably connected to the poem ‘Spleen’, whose author Charles Baudelaire visited the estate in the 19th century. Before WWI the estate came under the ownership of a German family who saw it being confiscated at a result of the war. Finally in 1976 the 40 hectares’ property at the time, were bought by the Merlaut family who invested in both cellar and vineyards and increased its size. Today, grand daughter Claire Villars runs the estate. View our selection.
The 80 hectares of vineyards are planted with 73% Cabernet Sauvignon , 20% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot with an average of 30 years old vine. A portion of 2 hectares is planted with 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc. The grand vin is aged in 40% new French oak barrels for 12 to 15 months.
Château Chasse Spleen (grand vin), L’Ermitage and L’Oratoire de Chasse Spleen (both second vin), Gressier Grand Poujeaux and Blanc de Chasse Spleen.
