In Bond case of Barolo Sperss, Gaja 2014.
Angelo Gaja is renowned for producing outstanding mould-breaking Barolos, and is recognised as the man who almost single-handedly began the renaissance in Piemonte wine making. Gaja began producing Sperss in the early 1990’s but soon declassified it as a Barolo in order to allow a little Barbera in the blend, as was traditional for his family’s wines. Only since the 2013 vintage has the style shifted again, 100 per cent Nebbiolo wines, labelled Barolo and with more finesse, purity and poise.
“The 2014 Barolo Sperss is an attractive wine from Gaja’s vineyards in Serralunga. There is good depth to the succulent black cherry, plum, smoke and licorice flavors, although it doesn’t quite have the explosiveness or power of the very best years. Because of the wine’s slender personality, the oak is a bit more evident than is typically the case. The Sperss also feels a bit forced in terms of extraction and oak, especially next to the Conteisa, where the choices have turned out to be more successful in bringing out the best the vintage has to offer.” 93 pts – Antonio Galloni
“The 2014 Sperss features a classic Serralunga nose, intensely balsamic and savoury with pure notes of pine, menthol, coals, tobacco, and juniper. In the palate the wine is tense, loaded with energy that will need serious ageing to fully develop. Impressive fruit concentration, with sweet red berries – raspberry, wild strawberry, red currant, plum – blood orange, bark, liquorice. Acidity and tannins lift this wine to its freshest expression.” – Gaja
