Catherine’s Block Pinot Noir 2016, Mount Brown

The Catherine’s Block label is reserved for the very best wines from Mount Brown Vineyards in Waipara.  As well as superb fruit, the wine gains creamy lees notes from being barrel fermented, with wild yeasts, adding a smoky depth and complexity to the wine. A rich full body Pinot Noir, with ripe flavours of plum and cherries, interlaced with hints of black pepper spice and complex forest floor aromas. The palate is round and generous with melted tannins. The grapes are taken from specific rows in the vineyard which are subject to more intense viticultural treatment and lower yields; even then only a few barrels made from those rows make it into the range. We are the exclusive UK importers of this wine

Winemaker Frank Manifold is steadily making a name for both himself and for Mount Brown, with the estate Pinot Noir winning a great review in Decanter in 2016. The Catherine’s Block label takes complexity and depth to the next level and is one to watch.

New Zealander still red wine from Waipara New Zealand, made with Pinot Noir.

About the producer: Mount Brown

Lying in the foothills of Mount Brown in Waipara Valley this abandoned wine estate was only rediscovered 15 years ago and it is something of a success story. Waipara has a greater variation in temperature between night and day than more northerly Marlborough, yields are much lower, and this valley is fast establishing a reputation for quality. Aromatic grape varieties such as Pinot Gris, and also Pinot Noir, are perfectly suited to Mount Brown’s small sheltered stony site and wine making here is of a very high order. View our selection.
