Product description
En Primeur Château Calon Ségur will be available for delivery or storage once it lands in the UK, usually two years following the en primeur offer.
Historians have identified the successive owners of Calon since the 12th century, with the Gascq, Ségur, Dumoulin, Lestapis and Gasqueton families being among the most recent and best known.
In 2012, the Gasqueton family sold Château Calon Ségur and Château Capbern to Suravenir, a subsidiary of the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group. Jean-Pierre Denis, its chairman, formed a partnership with Jean-François Moueix and his son Jean, the owners of the Videlot group. Together they have conducted renovation works worthy of Calon’s prestigious heritage.
Calon Ségur has a unique terroir resembling no other. While its altitude does not go above 13 metres, its relief is sharp, and its slopes favour good rainwater drainage. The vineyard is formed by three gravel outcrops that protrude towards the estuary.
Calon Ségur, Cabernet Sauvignon. The shared initials of these words are apparently no coincidence. “The Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone of Calon Ségur”, affirms estate manager Vincent Millet. Since his arrival in 2006, he has undertaken a comprehensive soil study at Calon.
The results show that its terroir is wonderfully suited to the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. Every year, this grape variety is being replanted at high density, some 10,000 vines per hectare. This long-term programme will stretch to 2032, by which time Cabernet Sauvignon will make up 70% of the vineyard. Since the 2008 vintage, it has represented three quarters of the final blend for the First Wine and may reach 90% in great vintages. Other varieties in the blend include Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 18-20 months aging in 100% new oak.
En Primeur pricing is per case as specified and excludes UK duty and VAT, which will be charged at the prevailing rate when the wine is released from bond for delivery. Bonded storage is available. Onward delivery or transfer is not included and can be quoted for on request. Free delivery on orders over £100 does not apply to bonded or en primeur wines.
