Product description
En Primeur Château Canon-la-Gaffelière will be available for delivery or storage once it lands in the UK, usually two years following the en primeur offer.
Located on the pied de côte south of the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, Château Canon La Gaffelière’s terroir consists of clay-limestone and clay-sand soil that is very permeable and particularly efficient at retaining heat. With a history dating back to the 17th century, the name references the connection to a leper colony with ‘gaffet’ translating as ‘leper’.
The choice of grape varieties is rather atypical for the appellation in light of the soil: 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernets ripen early and well on Canon La Gaffelière’s warm soil, adding power and aromatic complexity to Merlot’s opulence to create wines of natural elegance and finesse.
Fermentation takes place slowly and temperatures are kept under close control to bring out the best the grapes have to offer. The wine is aged on the lees to enhance its intrinsic qualities and each barrel is treated individually. Non-interventionist winemaking is practised in such a way as to make the most of vintage character. 15-18 months in oak depending on the vintage.
En Primeur pricing is per case as specified and excludes UK duty and VAT, which will be charged at the prevailing rate when the wine is released from bond for delivery. Bonded storage is available. Onward delivery or transfer is not included and can be quoted for on request. Free delivery on orders over £100 does not apply to bonded or en primeur wines.
