Being the third wine of Ornellaia, it reflects the philosophy and savoir-faire of the domain and combine the softness of Merlot, the structure and depth of Cabernet Sauvignon and the vivacity of Sangiovese. Aged for 10 months partly in oak barrel used for Ornellaia and partly in cement tanks, this Super Tuscan offers the perfect balance between tannic structure and expression of fresh fruit.
“… good depth of dark fruit with accompanying dried herbs and spice. The mouthfeel is dense and quite smooth despite the tannins, with a delightful minty finish. Fine acidity ties everything together…” 92pts – James Button Decanter Magazine 2017. The 2014 also received 90pts from James Suckling.
Italian still red wine from Bolgheri in Tuscany Italy made with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.
First vines at Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia were planted in 1982 on the foothills around Bolgheri. Facing the Mediterranean coast, this estate enjoys maritime breeze that cool down the vineyards, and a myriad of individual parcels well suited for the growth of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. They believe wines should truly express their terroir and their vintage and are obsessed with optimum harvest time on order to achieve full ripeness for both sugar and tannins. As a result, wines produced at the domain have become a favourite amongst wine lovers. View our selection.
The 97 hectares of vines are split in two neighbouring locations on the original property and at “Bellaria”, a newly developed area northeast of Bolgheri. The estate is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes are very carefully selected and each plot is fermented separately. The first wine is usually aged for 12 months in French oak barrel.
The two signature wines of the domain, are Ornellaia, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and the 100 percent Merlot, Masseto. Two other reds are produced; the second wine Le Serre Nuove and the third wine Le Volte alongside a white wine Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia and a sweet wine Ornus dell’Ornellaia.
