About the producer: Pol Roger

Like Davy’s, Pol Roger has been family-owned and independent since it was established in 1849. With 87 ha of vineyards located in the Vallee d’Epernay and the Cote de Blanc, this is one of the smallest estates in Champagne, but its top cuvée named after Sir Winston Churchill gave the brand international recognition and prestige. Pol Roger brut, their house champagne, represents great value and we are delighted to have it listed in our portfolio. View our range.

History of Pol Roger

Pol Roger made his first sale of wine in January 1849. The firm developed rapidly and moved from Aÿ to Epernay in 1851. As early as 1855, Pol began to favour the production of brut Champagne, the English favourite and 30 years later Champagne Pol Roger began its fame.
Even through WWI, prohibition in the United States and the Russian Revolution made export more difficult, Pol Roger Champagne continued to impress and raise international recognition. The founding family’s direct control over the firm helped it to maintain its identity as it grew and Pol Roger is still owned by family members nowadays.

Modernising the Winery

In recent years significant changes were made in the winery, which underwent complete renovation, in a constant quest for better quality. The enlargement of the premises and the installation of new stainless steel vats was completed in 2004. 2001 saw the launching of a new cuvée called “Rich”, which is almost a demi-sec. In that same year, the logo and the bottle were redesigned in order to bring more elegance and distinction. In 2007 the house launched the cuvée “Pure”, Extra Brut, to offer new another style to the range.

The Winston Churchill’s Cuvee

The emblematic figure of Winston Churchill left his mark on the post-war period. This British statesman was an unwavering client of the Maison Pol Roger: “The most delightful address in the world”, he declared. The legend says he consumed 42,000bt over his life. In 1955, the range of wines was enlarged which gave an additional impetus to the development of Pol Roger’s fame. In 1961, a vintage rosé was launched and a few years later, in 1975, a special vintage was born: The Cuvée Winston Churchill.
