A fresh, medium-bodied Pinot Noir from the cool hill region inland from Lisbon, just 12km from the Atlantic. Owned and worked by James and Ann Frost, James was originally from a Dorset farming family and served in the army before marrying Anna, whose family lived on the Quinta Sant’Ana estate until the revolution in 1974. They settled on the estate in 1992 and the first wines were produced in 2004.
Hand-picked grapes are crushed (a proportion by traditional foot treading in Lagares) and macerated before allowing natural yeasts to begin the fermentation. The fermentation is in open stone tanks followed by malolactic fermentation in old French oak barrels and aging for 12 months. The result is a round and elegant Pinot Noir with intense aromas of pure cherry and berry fruit and hint of meatiness and spices. Good complexity and a refreshing, elegant finish.

Located in Lisboa, some 35 km north of the capital near the Atlantic, Quinta de Sant’Ana benefits from a cooler climate than other areas in Portugal. The estate spreads over forty-four hectares, of which eleven and a half is planted with vines. This is a recent Domain and its first wines were produced in 2004 but results are already promising.
