  • About the producer

About the producer: Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Scotsman George Smith acquired this property in Pessac Leognan in the eighteen century and, named it Smith Haut Lafitte. After successive ownerships, the domaine is owned today by the Cathiard family, who combined the most modern winemaking techniques with traditional method, using organic compost, slow natural fermentation of the grapes, small wooden vats and ageing on the lees in barrel. The estate has excelled even in the most troublesome of vintages, due to a ruthless selection process, a commitment to quality and the long term vision for the estate. View our selection.

    Vineyard & Winemaking

The estate covers 78 hectares with an average of 40 years old vines and produces both white and red wine. The 67 hectares used for red wines are planted with 35% Merlot , 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot while the 11 hectares used for whites are planted with 90% Sauvignon Blanc , 5% Sauvignon Gris  and 5% Sémillon. Red wines spend 18 to 20 months in barrel (60% of which is new depending on the vintage) and white wines spend 12 months on their lees.

    Wine Produced

Château Smith Haut Lafitte (grand vin) with only 10,000 cases of red and 3,000 white produced, Les Hauts de Smith (second wine) and Le Petit Haut Lafitte, both available in white and red.
