Roodekrantz

Roodekrantz Wines is a small boutique label that crafts fine artisanal wines from selected blocks of old dry land vines with exceptional terroir. South Africa’s ‘Old Vine Project’, which aims to keep rare old-vine fruit away from large commercial blends, saw the Burger and Morkel families release the first Roodekrantz wines in 2015. Committed to preserving these ancient Certified Old Vine Heritage Vineyards, they work closely with their growers, encouraging respectful and sustainable vineyard practices. They source old parcels from Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Swartland, primarily focusing on producing Chenin Blanc. Their wines are made with minimal intervention in the cellar to allow expression of the character of the vineyards. No new oak ensures that the quality of the fruit and terroir shine through in every bottle. Read more

The People

Roodekrantz is a wine project by Marius Burger Junior and Senior, along with winemaker Danie Morkel. Their passion for old-vine Chenin and dedication to viticulture and hands-off winemaking are at the core of their philosophy. In just a couple of vintages, they have produced enthralling wines that are right up there with the best in South Africa.

The Vineyards

Roodekrantz is a wine project that is passionate about old-vine Chenin and dedicated to viticulture and hands-off winemaking. Their philosophy is based on the principle that wines are made in the vineyard. The vineyards that Roodekrantz uses are predominantly located in the Swartland and are planted in decomposed granite. The vineyard’s soil type is known for producing wines with a unique minerality and acidity. Roodekrantz’s commitment to organic and biodynamic farming and careful vineyard selection is therefore key to their results.
