Discover one of Bordeaux’s most-loved properties. We’re delighted to welcome Winemaker and General Manager of illustrious Bordeaux 3rd Growth Château Lagrange, Matthieu Bordes, as our special guest to guide us through a fantastic tasting of some truly special wines from the property. There isn’t a more fitting venue for this event to take place than The Boot & Flogger, the original Davy’s Wine Bar, just a short walk from London Bridge Station.
Ch. Lagrange has seen a dramatic change in fortunes over recent years and has firmly re-established itself as one of the most improved properties in the appellation as well as being, perhaps, one of the best value 3rd Growths available today. Located in Saint-Julien this 118 hectare vineyard enjoys a superb location on two hilltops of Günzian gravel, one of which is the highest point of the AOC Saint Julien. Purchased in 1983 by Japanese spirits firm Suntory, Ch. Lagrange has seen some of the biggest investment and improvements over the last few decades of any left-bank Chateaux. The wines are now without doubt starting to compete with the appellation’s best, and much more expensive, properties.
The Ch. Lagrange style is classic St. Julien: plump blackcurrants, pencil lead, a touch of cigar box and a tannic structure which ensures that it lasts and lasts. What General Manager, Matthieu Bordes, and his team have concentrated on in recent vintages is micro-managing the large area under vine – Ch. Lagrange is one of the largest estates in Bordeaux – to ensure there is more density and weight to the wine without compromising its classic St Julien profile.
Recent vintages have seen high praise from the critics, with Neal Martin claiming ‘Mathieu Bordes has crafted the best Lagrange [2019] in recent years, a benchmark for the estate’ and Antonio Galloni calling the 2021 ‘all class, all the way. Layered and super-expressive, Lagrange is a winner in 2021’.
After an aperitif, Matthieu will talk us through the history of the winery and what makes Château Lagrange so exceptional. We’ll taste through some of the estates finest wines and enjoy a specially prepared 4-course supper with pairings. The stunning line-up of wines for the evening includes 2019 Arums de Lagrange Blanc en magnum, a comparison of second label Fiefs de Lagrange, followed by a vertical of selected vintages of Château Lagrange.
