Surprise Wine
Located at the foot of the south-west slopes of the Saint-Émilion Plateau, Château Daugay looks over the Dordogne Valley as far as the eye can see. Like a lookout protecting the village, the Chateau takes its name from a derivation of daou gay, meaning “jay” named after the famous bird. Inherited by the de Bouard family in 1920, their care and attention to quality here has seen the wines grow in reputation. The de Bouard family are also owners of St. Emilion First Growth Ch. Angelus, and in fact the grapes of Ch. Daugay were once part of the Angelus blend for a few years following World War II.
On Wednesday 12th April we are very pleased to welcome 4th generation member of the family Thierry Grenier de Bouard to Davy’s. Thierry took over the reins of the estate in 2019. His goal is to continue the family traditions by breathing new life into the estate and enabling this “rare bird” of Saint-Émilion to continue to rise among the greatest. Thierry was previously managing director of Château Angelus before taking control of Daugay.
The beautiful 5.5 hectare estate has outstanding terroir which is a mix of clay and limestone, planted to 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. With similar terroir and soils to its illustrious neighbours, including Château Angelus (which costs upwards of £250 per bottle) it’s no wonder the quality of the wines are starting to garner the reputation they deserve. Thierry has offered to bring a wine from their illustrious neighbour on the night to experience the stylistic differences between the Chateaux. This is a tasting not to be missed!
After an aperitif, Thierry will talk us through the history of the winery and what makes Daugay so special. We’ll taste through some of the Chateau’s finest wines and a vintage from the 90’s and 2000’s and enjoy a specially prepared four-course dinner with wine pairings.
