We’re delighted to welcome Sally Evans, owner and winemaker at one of Bordeaux’s most exciting properties – Ch. George 7 in Fronsac. The wines have been an instant hit since we offered the inaugural 2018 vintage, with our en primeur allocation selling out every year. This will be a wonderful opportunity not only to taste and find out more about Bordeaux, but to find out what it takes to set up an award-winning winery in Bordeaux.
Sally made a complete career change in her 50’s when she made the inspired decision to launch into wine. She purchased a dilapidated property and empty winery with three hectares of 35-year-old Merlot vines, nestled in the heart of Saillans, Fronsac. It’s the lesser-known right bank appellation that boasts magnificent terroir neighbouring Pomerol and St. Emilion which lie to the East. The Merlot flourishes on terroir of clay soil and the underlying limestone plateau.
You will begin the evening with a refreshing and mouthwatering aperitif of Château George 7 Blanc 2022 – 93 Points, Georgina Hindle – Decanter Magazine, before tasting through some of the estate’s top reds. Sally will walk you through her journey from studying wine to creating award-winning wines in the right bank appellation of Fronsac where she lives full-time. She will explain the winemaking techniques she chose as well as her approach to sustainability and you will taste her first vintage, 2018 which achieved 94 points at the Decanter Word Wine Awards while comparing and contrasting her 2 red wines and production methods.
During dinner, she will talk through the various wines and suggested food pairing and openly share her adventures – the highs and lows of making the life change to become a winemaker in her 50s with no previous experience of wine. She will answer all your questions on the wines, and what it is like to be a British woman creating a wine château in an iconic French region.
