The Magnien family have been Burgundy wine growers for over a century. Having started with just 4 hectares of plots to sell to the négoces. The domaine now spreads 18ha across the Côte de Nuits. It is currently managed by Frédéric Magnien who took over the reins from his father Michel in 2008. Frédéric has continued in Michel’s footsteps and his vision makes him an outstanding ambassador for Burgundy excellence and approach to terroir. After many years of special care for the vines, the domaine acquired organic certification in 2008.
On Wednesday 14th June we welcome Frédéric Magnien to the Boot & Flogger. There isn’t a more fitting venue for this event to take place than in the Red Room, the original Davy’s Wine Bar, just a short walk from London Bridge Station.
Fourth generation Michel was born in 1946 and from a very young age worked on the vineyard with his father, Bernard Magnien (third generation). Over time the domaine acquired parcels of vines in renowned Grand Cru plots such as Clos de La Roche and Clos Saint-Denis, as well as some of the best 1er sites across the Côte de Nuits, some of which we will taste throughout the evening. The domaine has a big focus on respecting the purity of the fruit and characteristics of the soil in order to give each wine its own identity. Terracotta jars have been introduced, which are aromatically neutral and help to produce wonderfully elegant, perfumed wines. After many years of effort Domaine Michel Magnien was certified biodynamic in 2015.
After an aperitif, Frédéric will talk us through the history of the winery and what makes Domaine Michel Magnien so special. We will hear about the various winemaking techniques and processes that are used in order to gain and maintain both the organic and biodynamic certifications. We’ll taste through some of the domaines finest wines and enjoy a specially prepared four-course dinner with wine pairings. This is a tasting not to be missed!
