Catalonia

Benefitting from a strongly Mediterranean climate with plenty of cooler sites among the foothills, Catalonia is home of a whole array of wine styles. Emporda, bordering France, produces juicy reds, similar to the wines of the Languedoc. Further south, Penedes is mainly known for its Cava, a sparkling wine made via the traditional method using local grapes Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo, and more recently Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. On the cooler foothills, lies Priorat, the only area to have achieved the prestigious DOCa status in Spain alongside Rioja and renowned for its rich, full bodied, and dark reds from Garnacha and Carignan.
