Piedmont

Piedmont, meaning ‘foot of the hill’, lies at the bottom of the Alps and is home to more DOC and DOCG wines than any other part of Italy. Nebbiolo is king here and thrives on the sunny slopes of Langhe. Barolo and Barbaresco are the best examples to be found and some of Italy’s finest wines but only account for 3% of Piedmont’s production. Lighter, fresher styles of red wine made from Barbera and Dolcetto are very popular with the locals, alongside the aromatic and powerful white Arneis and sparkling wines of Asti.
