South Africa
The first vines may have been planted back in the 17th century but South Africa was slower than other countries to generate an export market. Excessive regulation and political isolation are among the reasons why, however, South African wine is now catching up fast. ‘Flying winemakers’ from abroad, with modern techniques and experience, have helped wine regions such as Stellenbosch, Breede River, Franschhoek and Paarl gain international recognition.
