This respected house was founded by Joseph Krug in 1843 with the support of his friend De Vivès. Joseph realised that the secret of Champagne lay in the blending rather than in reliance on the wines of a single year, and therefore he started a vast library of reserve wines to compose his prestigious sparkling wine. At the time only 2 Champagnes were produced, No.1, the fullest expression of the region to be made every year, and No.2, expressing the characteristics of a particular year. Since the 1970s Krug has also produced a rosé and single vineyard Clos du Mesnil Blanc de Blanc. This parcel, purchased accidently, was to produce one of the most prestigious Champagne to date. Vineyard & Winemaking
The 20 hectares of vine are located in Aÿ, Le Mesnil and Trépail. Grapes are also sourced from around 30 different crus, most of them being classified as Grand Cru. Grapes are vinified by plot in separate neutral oak casks. The house of Krug has no less than 150 reserve wines, from 10 to 12 different vintages, some of which may reach up to 15 years of age. Approximately 450 000 bottles are produced each year.
